The thrust ball bearing is designed to withstand the thrust load during high-speed operation, and is composed of a washer shaped ring with a ball rolling raceway groove. As the race is cushion type, thrust ball bearings are divided into two types: flat bottom cushion type and self-aligning spherical cushion type. In addition, the bearing can bear axial load, but cannot bear radial load.
There are two types of thrust ball bearings: one-way and two-way. One way thrust ball bearing is composed of two rings (shaft ring and bearing race) and a retaining structure with a ball. The bi-directional thrust ball bearing is composed of three rings and two retaining structures with balls. In case of two-way type, the shaft ring is clamped by two cages with balls.
